Apple Pay FAQs
About Apple Pay
Q: What is Apple Pay?
A: Apple Pay is a payments feature integrated into the Passbook® app that lets you add your debit card(s) to Apple Pay to make purchases at participating retailers using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology on your iPhone® 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 3.
Q: What is Near Field Communication (NFC) technology?
A: Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short-range wireless technology that allows two devices to exchange information quickly and conveniently at close proximity. Apple Pay uses NFC technology to transmit payment card information from your phone to a contactless payment terminal.
Q: How does Apple Pay work?
A: To add your eligible debit card(s) to Apple Pay, follow the Apple Pay instructions here. Apple Pay provides the same benefits and protection as your physical card, with the convenience of making secure transactions on your iPhone® 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 3. Use Apple Pay anywhere contactless payments are accepted, and to make purchases in-app with participating apps.
Q: How does my Prime Meridian Bank debit card work with Apple Pay?
A: When you add your Prime Meridian Bank debit card to Apple Pay, the number from your plastic card is replaced with a secure digital account number, called a token.
Q: What is a digital account number (token)?
A: A digital account number (token) is a substitute account number that replaces your card number and is used to make secure purchases in stores and in-apps. A digital account number will not work outside of the secure payment environment.
Q: What is the Secure Element?
A: The Secure Element is a dedicated chip in the iPhone that securely stores the digital account number.
Q: Which Prime Meridian Bank cards can I load in Apple Pay?
A: Any Prime Meridian Bank debit card works with Apple Pay. Follow the instructions here to add your card.
Q: How do I get Apple Pay on my device?
A: Apple Pay is integrated into the Passbook app, which comes pre-installed on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Apple Pay can be configured during setup of your new device or installation of the iOS update when it becomes available. If you already have an established iTunes® account, the card that is on file will be made available to you immediately upon Apple Pay setup. Adding additional Prime Meridian Bank debit cards may be done using the iSight® camera to instantly capture your card details -- or you can enter them manually.
Q: Can I have my card on more than one device?
A: You can add multiple Prime Meridian Bank debit cards into Apple Pay on multiple devices.
Q: Why am I being asked to verify my Prime Meridian Bank card?
A: For security reasons, we may need you to provide additional verification to add your Prime Meridian Bank card to Apple Pay. If necessary, Passbook will instruct how to verify your card. Once your information is verified, you will receive a Passbook notification that your card is ready for Apple Pay.
Using Apple Pay
Q: How do I pay using Apple Pay?
A: One touch to pay with Touch ID™ makes paying in stores happen in one natural motion. There is no need to open the app or even wake your display thanks to the Near Field Communication (NFC) antenna in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. To pay, just hold your iPhone near the contactless reader with your finger on Touch ID. You do not have to look at the screen to know your payment information was successfully sent. A subtle vibration and beep lets you know.
A: On the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, you can also use Apple Pay to pay with a single touch in-apps. Checking out is as easy as selecting "Apple Pay" and placing your finger on the Touch ID.
Q: How do I know which card is my default card?
A: The first card added to Apple Pay automatically becomes the default payment card, but you can go to Passbook anytime to pay with a different card. The payment card used within your iTunes account (on your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus account) automatically becomes your default card. To change the default card, go to Settings on your iPhone, then select Passbook and Apple Pay and select a default card.
Q: Does it cost anything to use Apple Pay?
A: There is no cost for Apple Pay from Prime Meridian Bank. However, an active data plan is required. Your debit card terms and conditions will apply for purchases. Based on your wireless plan and mobile carrier's offering, additional message and data charges may apply.
Q: Can I use Apple Pay outside of the United States?
A: As long as you are shopping at a participating retailer, Apple Pay will work outside the U.S. Based on your wireless plan and mobile carrier's offering, additional message, data charges and foreign transaction fees may apply.
Q: How do I get a refund for something I purchased with Apple Pay?
A: If you need to make a return for a purchase made with Apple Pay, you can receive a refund to your account. The key difference is that you may be asked to provide to the cashier the last four digits of your Device Account Number instead of the last few digits of your card number. To find the last four digits of your Device Account Number for your card, visit the “Passbook & Apple Pay” section of your device “Settings” or on the back of your card in the Passbook app. ?
Managing Your Card in Apple Pay
Q: Can I add my card to multiple Apple Pay wallets?
A: You can add your card to multiple Apple Pay wallets. However, for security purposes, your activation code will always be sent to the primary cardholder.
Q: How do I remove my card from Apple Pay?
A: You can remove your debit card from Apple Pay by selecting the card in Passbook, then click on the 'info' icon in the bottom right corner to view the back of the card. Scroll to the bottom to find “the remove” card option. This will instantly remove it from Passbook and the Secure Element where the digital account number is securely stored on the device.
Q: What if my phone is lost or stolen?
A: If your phone is lost or stolen, you can suspend Apple Pay by using the "Find my iPhone" app or visiting www.icloud.com and selecting the option for "Lost Mode". If you find your phone, you can unsuspend Apple Pay by following the prompts on your phone or via "Find my iPhone" app. If your phone has been stolen, you will be given the option to "Erase All" on www.icloud.com. This will delete all cards from Apple Pay and the Secure Element.
